This year, we’re thrilled to have Bert Keller, a professor and retired pastor and teacher, discussing “I Will Lament and Love: The Two Stories in Graceful Aging”. In this lecture we will explore ways to look at the journey of aging, noting the work of Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, Carl Jung, Erik and Joan Erikson, and Richard Rohr. Participants will be encouraged to think of aging as a process not of decline but of growth. To press our exploration further, people who are aging seem to be spelling out two narratives, two journeys, as in the paradoxical poem of George Herbert, “I will complain, yet praise; I will lament, and love.” Paying thoughtful attention to both stories can help us find more conscious awareness, more freedom, and more hope as we move into older age.
Thanks to generous donations to the Roper St. Francis Foundation, the Richard H. Fitzgerald Lecture Series in Pastoral Education has been established to honor retired Roper St. Francis radiation oncologist Dr. Richard H. Fitzgerald. The series will educate people of all faiths on pastoral care’s importance in medicine.
