A new senior center, borne out of a private-public partnership between Roper St. Francis and the City of Charleston, is on its way to becoming reality in West Ashley.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Louis Waring Jr. West Ashley Senior Center was held Monday.

There are approximately 25,000 seniors living in West Ashley, a section of the city that currently lacks a senior center.

The center will be located on the Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital campus. Its name comes from former Charleston City councilman Louis Waring.

Waring said Monday at the groundbreaking he is honored by the decision to name the center after him.

"I have a whole lot of humility with it," he said. "They could have named it after God knows how many other people, but they chose me. I'm very pleased."

Nearly two years ago, the city's committee on real estate voted unanimously to execute a letter of agreement between the City of Charleston and Roper St. Francis. It's a similar agreement to an already popular location for older residents to gather during their retirement.

The senior center is expected to open in 2018.

As of now, officials say there are more than 1,000 people on a waiting list.
